Things to Do on Hornby Island When It Rains

Hornby Island in the rain is its own kind of beautiful. The ocean turns dramatic in a way that sunny days never quite manage. And the rhythm of the island, which is already slower than almost anywhere else, slows down completely.

Most visitors arrive hoping for turquoise water and white sand, and on rainy days there can be a flicker of disappointment. We'd offer a reframe: rain on Hornby is when the island becomes most itself. Some of the best things to do on the island make even more sense with a soft grey sky overhead.

Walk Tribune Bay in the rain. The beach is largely empty in poor weather, the sand still turns white when the tide pulls back, and the water still glows turquoise even when the sun is hiding. Bring a warm jacket and walk the full length. It's one of the most cinematic experiences on the island.

Hike Helliwell Provincial Park. The trail is well-treed and protected from the heaviest weather. Sea cliffs, Garry oak meadows, eagles overhead. The Strait of Georgia looks vast and silver-blue under cloud cover.

Drive (or bike) to Ford's Cove. Smaller, quieter, dramatic in any weather. The marina has a small store and there's something about staring out at boats in the rain that puts the body at ease.

Forage Farm and Kitchen. Experience farm to table fare at forage farm and kitchen and enjoy a memorable dining experience rain or shine.

Book a treatment at Stillwater Nature Spa. Our oceanside canvas tent is three steps from the shoreline. On rainy days, the tent becomes its own cocoon. Heated tables, handcrafted botanical oils, and the steady sound of rain on canvas while the body lets go of everything it's been carrying. Many guests tell us a rainy day massage on Hornby feels more immersive than any sunny-day experience.
